Jonathan hands over the cheque for €17,250 raised through his Marathon hand-cycle fundraiser for
Spinal Injuries Ireland completed in May.
A few words from Phil O’Kelly, Fundraising Manager for Spinal Injuries Ireland on behalf on them as I presented him
the cheque for @spinalinjuriesireland today.
“Everyone at Spinal Injuries Ireland is so grateful for the amazing support that you, your friends and family have shown. €17,250 is an incredible amount to have raised, by far our biggest community fundraiser of the year and it couldn't have come at a better time as we adjust to supporting people living with a spinal cord injury throughout the pandemic and beyond. Thank you to each and every person who donated, and in particular to you for your inspirational achievement”.

On Tuesday 19th May, I will be attempting to hand-cycle a Marathon (42.2km/26miles) around my local area within a 5km radius of my home using a specially adapted hybrid hand-cycle attached to my wheelchair to raise much needed funds for Spinal Injuries Ireland.
Spinal Injuries Ireland are an essential support service for people who have sustained spinal cord injuries and their families, providing a nationwide person centred service to assist people engage fully in society following their injury.
Following my accident in 2014, I spent 6 months in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dun Laoghaire. This is where I was introduced to Spinal Injuries Ireland. They were my gateway back into society, bringing me to the Aviva stadium for the Autumn International Guinness Series Ireland Vs Australia match, along with various trips to the IMC cinema in Dun Laoghaire giving me the confidence to engage back into society.
Like many charities, Spinal Injuries Ireland's fundraising has been completely obliterated. They rely on fundraising for 60% of their operating costs, having already made major cutbacks and cutting their annual budget by 30%. Many of their annual fundraising events have been postponed and therefore are in urgent need of donations.
For many people, isolation is a relatively new concept in the time of Coronavirus, but to a lot of people with spinal cord injuries, isolation is an all too common fact of life.

AS DARKNESS falls on Wednesday 16th November, 25,000 people right around the world will get up from their armchairs and televisions, pull on their running shoes, slip on their red flashing armbands and hit the road to Run in the Dark. In over 50 cities worldwide these people
will flow through the streets like Dublin. Spinal cord injury strikes at the very heart of what it means to be human; an evolutionary amputation completed in a moment, turning people from standing upright, running forms into seated compromises of their former selves. It also interferes with the body’s internal systems that are designed to keep us alive and, multiple infections, neuropathic pain and uncontrollable spasms are common. |
This is why the Mark Pollock Trust is exploring the frontiers of spinal cord injury recovery, working with the world’s greatest scientists and building a tribe to amplify the mission. If you would like to join this worldwide tribe helping to fast-track a cure for paralysis, visit runinthedark.org for more information and register your place in the 2016 event. Winner of The TJR Selfie Competition is announced
What The Judge said:
A Slevin and Jane O’Connor were good compositions and good self portraits, very creative, I want to look at them again, but I didn’t feel that they were Selfies in the spirit in which we have come to know them, a la Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars. So, they get a mention for being good pictures. And then the other two were Evo Brennan and Sue Nolan. Now this really was a photo finish, so to speak. They were both great selfies, in the spirit of things - packed full of people, loads of smiley faces and a sense of the occasion, and I really had a hard time trying to make a final decision on it, but in the end I’ve had to plump for Sue Nolan - with the kids and JR himself in it. The faces are just great in it, and it really has a sense of spontaneity and fun about it, so voila, Sue Nolan wins! Now over to you to break the news! Cheers, all the best. Conor |
